As you may have heard, Scouts Canada is currently reviewing our five core programs (Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts, Venturer Scouts, and Rover Scouts) and we want your input!
The "Program Review Youth Survey" is already underway, but we really need to hear from more Youth!
The survey takes approximately 10 minutes and give Scouts Canada vital feedback. The survey will close on Sunday, February 5, 2012.
Here’s the link: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/SC_Youth_Survey_2012
Parents/Guardians can help their Cub Scouts take the survey.
On Tuesday, Cubs received their Kub Kar kits.
Background
Did you know that Kub Kar is an old Scouting traditions going back more than 30 years?Cubs all across Canada and in the US design a vehicle starting from a block of wood, carve or cut it into a desirable shape and then race it against other Cubs. Cubs learn how to use woodworking tools and important aspects of wood shop safety while under the supervision of leaders and adults. The work can qualify for badge requirements for the Tawny Star, the Carpenter Badge and the Handicraft Badge.
Rules & Guidelines
Kub Kars are to be made by Cubs – not the adult helper. Initial cuts by adults are permitted but all finishing, that is shaping and painting, is to be done by the Cub.
Avoid embarrassment at race day… follow the rules included in the Kub Kar Kit. Last year, some of the wood blocks came out of the box longer than the permitted length. Please check yours to avoid surprises.

Important dates:
- Tuesday 7 Feb 2012 – Race at the regular pack meeting. You can bring you Kub Kar from last year.

- ice safety guidelines
- what to do if lost
- rules for protecting nature when hiking
Cub Scouts are to bring their survival/first aid kit to the meeting.
The Pack will be going on a hike in the Portland Estates trail system tomorrow evening. Cub Scouts are to dress for the weather and must bring/wear the following items with them:
- Hat/tuque, cloves/mittens, and boots. Cub Scouts will not be allowed o join the hike without these articles of clothing.
- Survival kit – this is the one they put together for camp
- Water bottle
- Flashlight
- Day pack
Drop off and pick up will be at the regular times in front of the school. The event will be conducted rain, snow or shine unless there is extreme weather conditions.
Please mark your calendar for the weekend of 18 to 20 May. We will be heading to Camp Harris for an exciting weekend.
Note that the Cub Scout Pack does not meet if the school is closed – check the Halifax Regional School Board web site for school cancellation information or call (902) 464-INFO(4636). If a field trip is scheduled on a Cub Scout meeting evening, we will inform you around 3pm.

Information on where to put on the various badges the Cub Scouts have been awarded can be found on this page of our website. Badges go in different places depending on which uniform your Cub Scout has:
- New Uniform – Grey shirt – all badges go on the shirt
- Old Uniform – Tan shirt – some badges go on the shirt, while others go on the red sash
For the new Cub Scouts, the following badges were provided at investiture:
- Province / Council Badge – this is a shield-like badge with the flag of Nova Scotia
- Area Badge – this is also a shield-like badge that looks a lot like the Province/Council badge… but it has “Dartmouth Area” written on it
- Group Badge – this is a half-moon shaped badge that has “1st Portland Estates” on it.
- Link Badge – this badge was given to the Cub Scouts that were also in Beaver Scouts. It shows two circles linked together like a chain
There are three ways of putting badges on the uniform: sewing, gluing, and iron-on. There are instructions in the Scouts Canada document that can be found here on how this can be done.
